The Wakasa Wan Energy Research Center (WERC) was established in 1994 in order to activate the area through the dissemination of nuclear power and energy-related technologies to the local industries. Since then, we have worked on researches to apply accelerators to the fields of medicine, industry, agriculture, forestry and aquiculture or to effectively utilize energy as well as human resource development and interregional exchange, by making the most of science and technology and human resources supporting it, which have been accumulated in Wakasa Wan region. Furthermore, Fukui Prefecture formulated the “Energy Research and Development Centralization Plan” in March 2005 for autonomous linkage of the region with nuclear power, and WERC newly began to take a major role of the project as the promotion engine. Entering a phase of such a major change, we at WERC are working on a task to make our research institute more closely-attached to the region. We will continue to carry out advanced and community-based projects which meet the needs of the times so as to contribute to permanent development of the region and international society by cultivating a relationship with a variety of people from Japan and abroad.
